| LAWMAKER URGES SWINE FLU SUMMIT |

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Third district Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr. has urged the Department of Health (DOH) to conduct a summit on swine flu preparedness.
Ramon Navarra, Gonzales's chief of staff, told Sun.Star that the congressman, who joined President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in her trip to Egypt and Syria over the weekend, said he has relayed his concern to DOH Regional Director Rio Magpantay.
"Dr. Magpantay agreed to conduct a summit soon, initially to include concerned health and local officials in Pampanga's third district," Navarra said.
Among those expected to take part in the proposed summit are barangay health workers, municipal health workers, district hospital heads and other officials.
The congressman, Navarra said, was alarmed by the quick spread of the swine flu virus, now known as H1N1, to other countries, including Hong Kong.
"The congressman would like our people, particularly his constituents, to be properly informed about this new threat to public health, and how the necessary safeguards and precaution can be put in place," he said.
He said the summit could also yield inputs and recommendations that could be vital to legislative effort to improve the country's health infrastructure and programs, especially against such emerging threats as the swine flu.
In addition, Navarra said the summit could also help mobilize other sectors to help in the effort against the swine flu threat.
"It is likely that other sectors other than those in health could play an important role as well," he said. (Sunstar Pampanga)
